Christantus Uche Sparks Dominant Crystal Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a comfortable win that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal direct entry to the knockout stages, especially following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match offered a chance for several Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their league season were no match even for a mostly second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
